What it is

This is the only Costco Wholesale warehouse on the island of Kauaʻi. It is a members-only big-box retail store offering a wide variety of goods, typically in bulk quantities, including groceries, electronics, apparel, and housewares. Located in Līhuʻe, it functions as a primary shopping destination for both residents and visitors. The facility includes a full suite of Costco services, such as a gas station, pharmacy, optical department, tire center, and an outdoor food court.

Visitor experience

For visitors, the Līhuʻe Costco is most often a strategic first stop after arriving at the nearby Līhuʻe Airport (LIH). Travelers staying in vacation rentals or condos with kitchens use it to stock up on groceries, snacks, and beverages for their stay at prices that are often significantly lower than smaller island grocery stores.

Beyond basic groceries, the store is a popular source for:

  • Beach Supplies: Items like beach chairs, umbrellas, coolers, reef-safe sunscreen, and towels are commonly available and represent a cost-effective alternative to renting.
  • Local Products & Souvenirs: The store carries a variety of Hawaiʻi-specific items, making it a convenient place to buy gifts. Popular purchases include large bags of macadamia nuts, Kona coffee, local-brand snacks (e.g., Maui onion chips), POG (Passion-Orange-Guava) juice, and chocolate-covered macadamia nuts.
  • Prepared Foods: The deli and bakery sections offer ready-to-eat meals, rotisserie chickens, and local favorites like guava cake. While poke is often available, its sourcing may not be local.
  • Food Court: This location features a popular and unusual outdoor food court, offering the standard inexpensive Costco menu of hot dogs, pizza, and other items. It is a very common choice for a cheap and quick meal upon arrival or before departure.

The shopping environment is that of a standard, busy warehouse. It can be crowded, particularly on weekends and midday.

Logistics

  • Location: 4300 Nuhou St, Lihue, HI 96766. It is located just a few minutes' drive from the Līhuʻe Airport (LIH).
  • Hours:
    • Warehouse: Monday–Friday, 10:00 AM–8:30 PM; Saturday, 9:30 AM–7:00 PM; Sunday, 10:00 AM–6:00 PM.
    • Gas Station: Monday–Friday, 6:00 AM–9:30 PM; Saturday, 6:00 AM–8:00 PM; Sunday, 6:00 AM–7:00 PM.
    • Pharmacy: Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM–7:00 PM; Saturday, 9:30 AM–6:00 PM; Closed Sunday. The pharmacy closes for a 30-minute lunch break daily from 1:30 PM to 2:00 PM.
  • Membership: A Costco membership is required to enter the store and make purchases, including at the gas station and food court.
  • Parking: A large, free parking lot is available on-site. The lot is frequently congested, and finding a space near the entrance can be challenging during peak hours.
  • Duration: A quick essentials run can take 30–60 minutes. A full provisioning stop for a week-long stay could take 1.5–2 hours, including navigating the store, checkout, and using the gas station.
  • Planning: It is best utilized as an "anchor" activity on arrival day to prepare for a self-catered trip. The gas station is also a strategic final stop to refuel a rental car before returning it to the airport.

Safety and cautions

  • Crowds: The store and parking lot are often very busy. Expect long checkout lines during peak shopping times.
  • Membership Required: Visitors without a Costco membership will be unable to shop.
  • Bag Policy: Hawaiʻi has a statewide ban on single-use plastic bags at checkout. Shoppers should bring reusable bags. Alternatively, empty cardboard boxes are usually available for use near the checkout area.
  • Bulk Quantities: Visitors on shorter stays should be mindful of purchasing perishable items in bulk to avoid waste.
  • Pharmacy Closures: The pharmacy is closed on Sundays and has a daily 30-minute lunch closure, which should be factored into any prescription-related planning.

Editorial take

  • Who should prioritize it: This is an essential stop for visitors staying in accommodations with a kitchen (condos, vacation rentals), especially families and larger groups. It offers significant value for groceries, drinks, and alcohol. It's also the most practical place to buy, rather than rent, beach gear like chairs and coolers for a multi-day trip.
  • Who should skip it: Travelers staying in traditional hotels without self-catering facilities will find little reason to visit, as most items are sold in bulk. Those on very short trips may not benefit from the large quantities. Shoppers seeking unique, locally crafted goods or a boutique experience should look to farmers' markets and the small shops in towns like Hanalei or Kapaʻa.
  • Distinctions: Do not confuse Costco with standard island supermarkets like Foodland, Safeway, or Times Supermarket. Those stores do not require a membership, offer items in smaller quantities, and may have different local product selections (like fresh, locally sourced poke counters), though their prices are generally higher.
