What it is
The Ocean Course at Hokuala is an 18-hole, par-72, Jack Nicklaus Signature championship golf course located at the Timbers Kauaʻi resort in Līhuʻe. It is known for having the longest continuous stretch of oceanfront holes in Hawaiʻi, with a back nine that plays along dramatic Pacific cliffs. The course was originally part of a 36-hole complex called Kauai Lagoons (opening as the Kiele Course in 1988) and was redesigned and renovated by Jack Nicklaus in 2016-2017, which included updating all greens to TifEagle Bermuda grass. It is a high-end resort course renowned for its scenery and challenging play.
Visitor experience
The course is defined by its stunning ocean views, particularly on the back nine. The front nine weaves through mango and guava groves and inland lagoons, while holes 13 through 18 play directly along the ocean cliffs, requiring shots over water and ravines. The experience is often described as dramatic and visually spectacular. Trade winds are a significant factor, especially in the afternoon, adding to the challenge.
Beyond traditional golf, the course offers alternative ways to experience the grounds, including four-person golf carts, two-person carts, single-rider "surf-the-earth" scooters, and GolfBoards (a board for "surfing" the course). A nine-hole FootGolf loop is also available for families and non-golfers.
Amenities include a full practice facility with a driving range and short-game area, a pro shop, and on-course beverage service. Dining is available at Hualani's, the resort's farm-to-table restaurant. Staff, including the starter, are often praised for their welcoming "aloha spirit."
A new clubhouse was planned for completion in 2025. It is unconfirmed if construction is complete, so visitors should verify whether they will be using permanent or temporary facilities for check-in and other services.
Logistics
Location: 3132 Ninini Point Street, Līhuʻe, Kauaʻi, HI 96766. The course is part of the Timbers Kauaʻi Ocean Club & Residences at Hokuala, located approximately five minutes from Līhuʻe Airport (LIH).
Reservations: Tee times can be booked online and are recommended 30-60 days in advance, especially for desirable early morning slots that have calmer wind conditions.
Cost: This is a premium-priced course. Standard guest green fees are listed as starting from $330, with resort guest rates from $295 and twilight rates (after 12:00 PM) from $235. Prices are dynamic and subject to change. Rental clubs are available for approximately $85.
Timing and Duration: A standard round takes approximately 4 to 4.5 hours. It should be treated as a half-day or anchor activity. Early morning tee times (before 9:00 AM) are recommended to avoid the strongest trade winds.
Parking: Parking is available at the resort.
Dress Code: A collared shirt is required. Denim is not permitted. Soft-spike golf shoes are mandatory.
Safety and cautions
Ocean Hazards: Several holes on the back nine play along and over ocean cliffs. Errant shots can easily be lost to the ocean or ravines. Bringing extra golf balls is highly recommended.
Weather: Trade winds are a major factor and can significantly impact club selection and shot difficulty. There is limited shade on the course, so sun protection (hat, sunscreen) and hydration are critical.
Wildlife: The course is a habitat for the nēnē (Hawaiian goose), a protected species. Visitors must keep a safe distance and not disturb the birds.
Prohibitions: Due to the course's proximity to Līhuʻe Airport, the use of drones is strictly forbidden.
Editorial take
The Ocean Course at Hokuala is a bucket-list experience for serious golfers who prioritize world-class scenery and are willing to pay a premium for it. The combination of the Jack Nicklaus design and the dramatic, half-mile stretch of oceanfront holes makes it one of Hawaiʻi's most memorable rounds. It is best suited for low- to mid-handicap players who can handle the challenges of forced carries and strong winds. Its extreme convenience to the Līhuʻe airport makes it a unique option for a first- or last-day round.
Beginners, high-handicap players, and budget-conscious golfers should skip this course. The frequent wind and multiple forced carries can be frustrating and lead to many lost balls. The high green fee may not feel justified if course conditions are not pristine (e.g., during aeration) or if the round is a struggle. Visitors sensitive to ongoing resort development should verify the status of clubhouse construction before booking. For a slightly more forgiving and less expensive (though still premium) ocean-view experience, travelers might consider Poipu Bay Golf Course on the south shore.
