Cliffside comfort with island-sized amenities and sunset theatre

The Cliffs at Princeville sits on dramatic bluffs where every evening feels like a private showing of the Pacific — two lanais, a kitchen to linger in, and solar panels powering much of the resort make it an unexpectedly thoughtful base for North Shore adventures (and sunset rituals).

First impressions and vibe

Checking in felt like arriving at a friendly neighborhood tucked into 22 acres of palms and hibiscus. “Aloha — welcome home,” the front-desk agent said as the scent of plumeria wafted through the open-air lobby. My one‑bedroom condo (two lanais, full kitchen, washer/dryer) leaned into indoor–outdoor living: morning coffee on the lanai, trade-wind breezes instead of humming compressors, and Adirondack chairs along the cliff for sunset gatherings. The property’s scale surprised me — 202 suites across low-rise buildings that make the place feel more community than hotel.

The resort has resort-scale amenities that genuinely deliver: two large pools with a separate kiddie pool, two hot tubs, tennis courts and a putting green, plus pickleball/shuffleboard courts and a small fitness center. Families will appreciate the playground and the roomy, home-style condos with full kitchens for easy breakfasts before a day at Queen’s Bath or Tunnels Beach. For tennis lovers, the on-site programs (run in partnership with local groups) are a nice touch and give the grounds a lively, neighborhood-club energy.

What stood out

Two things I kept coming back to: the environmental commitment and the sunset vantage points. Solar panels power most rooms, and The Cliffs has been recognized as one of the nation’s top eco-friendly resorts — it’s rare to find such meaningful sustainability at a property this size. And then there’s the clifftop: every evening guests gather to watch color spill across the water — it’s simple, communal ritual that outshines any staged sunset event.

I used the on-site Envoy EV car-share (Tesla) for a short hop to sample nearby dining at the Westin Princeville Villas and enjoyed an elegant Pacific-Hawaiian meal at Nanea Restaurant and Bar. For more casual nights, a short drive brings you to Hideaways Pizza Pub or the bustling options in Hanalei and the Princeville shopping center.

Practical tips and one major caveat

The resort’s lack of air-conditioning is the clearest caveat: rooms rely on ceiling fans and trade winds, which many guests find pleasant, but summer visitors or light‑sleepers sensitive to heat might want to plan around it. Units can feel warm during still spells, and some travelers noted thin walls — request an upper-floor or renovated unit if privacy and quieter nights matter.

Helpful tips:

  • Book directly and ask about AAA/AARP or kamaʻāina rates for better value.
  • Request renovated suites and upper floors early in high season.
  • Rent a car (or use the on-site Tesla) — shuttle and taxi options are limited.
  • Pack a small fan or lightweight bedding if you’re prone to overheating.

Why stay (or skip)

If you prize spacious, condo-style accommodation, want easy access to Hanalei and the North Shore’s beaches, and appreciate a genuinely eco-minded resort with family-friendly programming, The Cliffs is a superb, affordable alternative to nearby luxury properties like the Hanalei Bay Resort or the smaller, quieter Ali'i Kai Resort. Its mix of pools, courts, and cliffside drama gives travelers the best of both worlds: activity and serenity.

Choose The Cliffs if you want roomy, independent accommodations, sunset camaraderie, and sustainability sewn into the stay. If relentless air-conditioning and a full-service on-site restaurant are dealbreakers, consider one of the larger resort hotels instead. For me, the trade-offs were worth it — I left with sand in my shoes, sunsets in my head, and plans to return.
