How to Get This Shot
Seasonality
Bird of Paradise can bloom across much of the year in Hawaiʻi, but you’ll often find the freshest, most photogenic blooms during warmer months when plants are actively growing.
In Kauaʻi’s wetter microclimates, flowers and foliage can look especially lush; after heavy rain, aim for a break in the clouds for clean light and avoid windier moments that can blur petals.
Photo Tips
- Tap to focus on the front edge of the petals; lower exposure slightly to protect bright yellows from blowing out
- Shoot in open shade or soft light for richer color and less harsh glare
- Get close and fill the frame; simplify the background by changing your angle a few inches
- Use Portrait mode only if the phone can lock onto the flower reliably—otherwise use standard mode for cleaner edges
- Take a burst in light breeze to ensure at least one sharp frame
Logistics & Safety
This type of shot is easiest in botanical gardens, resort landscaping, or roadside plantings around Kauaʻi—look for accessible clusters of Bird of Paradise and work in gentle light to avoid harsh midday contrast; be mindful of staying on paths and not handling the plants.
