How to Get This Shot

Seasonality
Cane toads can be encountered year-round on Kauaʻi, but they’re often easiest to spot during wetter periods when lawns and edges of fields stay damp and active with insects. In summer, look during humid evenings or after brief showers; in winter, post-rain conditions can bring more movement and reflective droplets that add visual interest for photos.
Photo Tips
- Get low to the ground and fill the frame with the toad for maximum texture - Tap-focus on the eye; slightly lower exposure to preserve highlights on wet grass - Use 2x/3x zoom instead of getting extremely close to avoid spooking it - Shoot in burst mode to catch subtle head or eye movement - Try portrait mode only if the edge detection looks clean around the bumpy outline
Logistics & Safety
This is a ground-level wildlife spot near Kilauea; watch your step in wet grass, avoid handling toads (wash hands if contact occurs), and be mindful of private property boundaries and nighttime visibility.
