How to Get This Shot

Seasonality
Driftwood scenes like this often look best in the months following larger north-shore swells (roughly late fall through spring), when surf and storms tend to rearrange the shoreline and deposit fresh wood. Summer typically brings calmer water and clearer, lighter-toned scenes; winter can deliver more dramatic surf but may limit safe beach access depending on conditions and tides.
Photo Tips
- Tap and hold on the driftwood to lock focus/exposure, then slightly lower exposure to preserve wave highlights - Get low to the sand so the driftwood feels larger and more graphic against the ocean - Use 2x/3x zoom to compress the waves and simplify the background - Shoot in burst/live mode and choose the frame where the foam lines look cleanest - Turn on grid lines and keep the horizon perfectly level
Logistics & Safety
This is a classic sandy beach setup—plan around tide so you can work near the waterline without waves creeping into your foreground, and watch for sneaker waves and shifting driftwood. Early or late light reduces harsh shadows and keeps the scene comfortable for lingering compositions. Please avoid building or rearranging driftwood; photograph what’s naturally there.
