How to Get This Shot

Seasonality
Kauaʻi’s drier months (roughly April–October) often bring clearer mornings and more consistent light, which helps the sunrise color and reflections on wet sand pop. In winter (roughly November–March), bigger swells and fast-changing weather can create moodier skies and more wave action—great for drama, but expect wind, spray, and occasional rain showers.
Photo Tips
- Tap-and-hold on the bright horizon to lock focus/exposure, then slide exposure down slightly to keep sunset color - Get low and close to the driftwood for strong leading lines; keep the horizon level - Use 0.5x (ultra-wide) carefully—avoid placing the driftwood at the extreme edges to reduce distortion - Try Live Photo/long-exposure effect (if available) to soften the water while keeping the foreground steady - Wipe the lens often; salt spray and mist will reduce contrast quickly
Logistics & Safety
Best light is the 20–40 minutes before sunrise; arrive early to scout driftwood and safe footing around dark lava rocks. Expect wind and occasional surf run-up—keep distance from the waterline and watch for rogue waves near rocky sections. Please avoid building or rearranging driftwood; photograph what’s naturally there.
