How to Get This Shot
Seasonality
You can find photogenic caterpillars year-round on Kauaʻi, but they’re often easiest to spot after light rains when vegetation is fresh and insects are more active.
In the wetter months (roughly Nov–Mar), look between showers for active crawling and softer light; in drier months (roughly Apr–Oct), check early morning when temperatures are cooler and subjects move less.
Photo Tips
- Use your phone’s Macro mode (or move in slowly until focus locks) and tap the caterpillar’s eye/face area.
- Shoot in open shade to avoid harsh specular highlights on the bright green body.
- Lower your angle to get level with the subject for a cleaner background.
- Keep the background far away (don’t shoot toward nearby leaves) to maximize blur.
- Take a short burst and pick the sharpest frame—tiny movements can shift focus.
Logistics & Safety
This is a “slow down and scan” stop rather than a single landmark—look along leaf edges and host plants in gardens and lowland trails near Līhuʻe, especially in calm, shaded spots; avoid handling wildlife and be mindful of fragile vegetation off trail.
