How to Get This Shot
Seasonality
Geckos and ti plants can be found year-round on Kauaʻi, especially in warm, humid garden areas. Summer often brings more consistent light and more active lizards during the day.
In winter, frequent showers can deepen foliage color and add a fresh look, but you’ll need to work around wet leaves and lower, softer light.
Photo Tips
- Tap to focus on the gecko’s eye; lower exposure slightly to preserve the bright reds and greens
- Use 2x/3x zoom (or Portrait mode if it doesn’t blur the subject) to reduce background clutter
- Hold steady and shoot a short burst to catch a sharp frame when the gecko pauses
- Try a vertical composition to follow the gecko’s body line along the stalk
- Avoid casting a shadow; approach from the side and keep movements slow
Logistics & Safety
This type of shot is best made in botanical gardens, resort landscaping, or shaded trail edges where ti plants grow; move slowly, give wildlife space, and avoid touching plants or handling lizards.
