How to Get This Shot
Seasonality
Winter and spring often bring more active weather, which can create the most colorful, textured sunset skies—at the cost of occasional rain squalls and wind.
Summer and early fall tend to be calmer and clearer, great for clean horizons and smoother water reflections, though sunsets can be less fiery without cloud drama.
Photo Tips
- Tap and hold on the bright sky near the sun to lock focus/exposure, then slightly lower exposure to protect highlights
- Use 0.5x only if you can keep the horizon level; otherwise stick to 1x–2x for cleaner edges and less distortion
- Place the surfer or a boat on a lower-third to add a strong silhouette and sense of place
- Shoot a short burst as waves roll in to capture the best reflection streaks
- Enable HDR, but avoid over-brightening the foreground—silhouettes are part of the mood
Logistics & Safety
This is an easy, walk-up shoreline spot with the best color typically 10–25 minutes after the sun touches the horizon; arrive early for parking and to scout a clear view line along the beach. Use caution around shorebreak and slippery wet sand, and be mindful of ocean conditions if stepping into shallow water for a lower angle.
