How to Get This Shot
Seasonality
Late spring through early fall often brings clearer evenings and richer golden light, increasing your chances of defined sun rays and crisp mountain silhouettes.
Winter can be moodier with more frequent showers and heavier cloud cover—great for dramatic skies, but plan for shifting light and occasional rain squalls.
Photo Tips
- Tap on the bright sky near the sun and slide exposure down to keep highlights from blowing out
- Use 0.5x (ultra-wide) sparingly; keep the horizon level and avoid stretching the mountains at the edges
- Enable HDR for balanced sky/land detail, then recheck that the sun area isn’t clipped
- Shoot a short burst as rays change quickly when clouds move
- Place the horizon in the lower third to emphasize the sky and crepuscular rays
Logistics & Safety
This type of scene is commonly photographed from the Hanalei Valley roadside pullouts near taro fields—arrive 20–30 minutes before sunset for setup and stay through afterglow. Be careful with narrow shoulders, respect private property around fields, and watch for sudden passing showers.
