Hawaiian Coot Lagoon

A close, clean wildlife portrait of a Hawaiian coot gliding through gently rippled water, with strong contrast between its dark plumage and bright bill and eye. The simple background keeps attention on the bird’s shape and motion.

How to Get This Shot

Seasonality
You can spot Hawaiian coots year-round on Kauaʻi, but calmer mornings in the drier months often make for smoother water textures and cleaner reflections. During wetter periods, ponds and wetlands can be more active with birds, but overcast skies may flatten contrast—great for even exposure, less ideal if you want sparkle on the water.
Photo Tips
- Tap and hold on the bird to lock focus/exposure, then slightly lower exposure to protect highlights on the white bill. - Use 2x–5x zoom (or the tele lens if your phone has one) to fill the frame without getting too close. - Shoot in burst mode as the bird turns its head—catch a crisp eye and a pleasing profile. - Keep the waterline simple: leave space in front of the bird for a natural “swimming into” composition. - If reflections look busy, shift a step left/right to find smoother ripples behind the head.
Logistics & Safety
This is a wetland/pond-style wildlife stop near sea level; plan for soft ground, mosquitoes at dawn/dusk, and respectful distance from birds (no feeding). Bring patience and stay still—coots often swim into a good angle on their own.
