How to Get This Shot
Seasonality
Roosters are common year-round around Waimea Canyon/Lookout parking areas, so season matters less than light and crowds.
For cleaner backgrounds and calmer subjects, aim for early morning when the lookout is quieter and the light is softer; midday sun can create harsh highlights on the comb and beak.
Photo Tips
- Use 2x–3x (or portrait mode) and step back slightly to avoid wide-angle distortion of the beak
- Tap the eye to focus, then lower exposure a bit to protect bright reds from clipping
- Look for an even, shaded spot (or open shade) to reduce harsh contrast on the comb
- Keep the background simple by changing your angle a few steps left/right
- Shoot a short burst to catch a sharp eye and a clean head angle
Logistics & Safety
This kind of shot is typically made near the Kalalau Lookout/Waimea Canyon overlook parking and walking paths where roosters wander close to people; keep a respectful distance, don’t feed wildlife, and be mindful of other visitors while you reposition for a cleaner background.
