How to Get This Shot

Seasonality
Kapaʻa faces east, so sunrise light is the star year-round. The most vivid color often happens when there are broken clouds—enough to catch light, but not fully overcast. For reflections like this, aim for mornings with lighter winds and lower swell so the tidepools stay glassy. Winter can bring bigger surf and more chop, while late spring through early fall often delivers calmer conditions for mirror-like water (though trade winds can still pick up).
Photo Tips
- Get low and close to the tidepool so the reflection fills the bottom half of the frame - Tap to expose for the bright sky, then slightly lower exposure to keep color in the highlights - Use your phone’s 0.5x/ultra-wide carefully—keep the horizon perfectly level to avoid a “bent” ocean line - Try HDR, but if it looks crunchy, turn HDR off and take two exposures (sky and reflection) to choose later - Hold still and shoot a short burst as ripples settle to find the cleanest reflection
Logistics & Safety
Look for accessible shoreline pull-offs and beach parks along the Kapaʻa waterfront, then scout at low tide for shallow pools and a safe place to stand on rock. Watch for rogue waves and slippery algae-covered stone, and avoid stepping on living reef or tidepool creatures.
