How to Get This Shot

Seasonality
Sunset photos like this work year-round on Kauaʻi, but late spring through early fall often delivers clearer horizons and stronger warm tones when trade winds keep the air crisp. Winter can be spectacular too, with more frequent storm clouds creating bold textures and color, though squalls and haze can reduce visibility—arrive early and be ready for fast-changing light.
Photo Tips
- Tap the sky near the sun and slide exposure down slightly to keep highlights from blowing out - Use 2x/3x zoom (if available) to make the sun larger and simplify the horizon - Keep the horizon perfectly level; turn on the grid and place the sun near a third - Try HDR, but if it looks unnatural, switch it off and underexpose a touch - Shoot a short burst as the sun touches the horizon; the best shape changes second-by-second
Logistics & Safety
This is a west-facing shoreline scene; pick any accessible west or southwest Kauaʻi overlook or beach with an unobstructed horizon, arrive 30–45 minutes before sunset, and watch for wet rocks, shorebreak, and changing conditions near the waterline.
