How to Get This Shot
Seasonality
Kauaʻi sunsets can be great year-round, but late spring through early fall often brings calmer trade-wind patterns and clearer horizons for crisp sun orbs and clean color gradients.
In winter, bigger surf and fast-moving clouds can create dramatic skies and texture on the water—just expect more spray, stronger winds, and rapidly changing light.
Photo Tips
- Tap-expose on the bright sky near the sun, then slide exposure down slightly to keep highlights from blowing out
- Use the horizon level tool and keep the ocean line perfectly straight
- Include a strip of the green foreground to add depth, but avoid letting it dominate the frame
- Try HDR (or shoot a quick exposure bracket if your phone supports it) to hold cloud and shoreline detail
- Wipe the lens often—salt spray and humidity can soften contrast
Logistics & Safety
Expect uneven, sharp lava rocks and occasional slippery tide pools—sturdy footwear helps and keep a safe distance from wave wash. Arrive 20–30 minutes before sunset to scout a stable shooting spot and stay for afterglow color once the sun drops below the horizon.
