How to Get This Shot

Seasonality
Sunset is rewarding year-round on Kauaʻi’s west side, but late spring through early fall often brings calmer trades and clearer horizons for cleaner color and sharper silhouettes. In winter, north Pacific swell can boost wave texture and drama; expect more wind, spray, and fast-changing weather that can produce intense skies if you time breaks in the clouds.
Photo Tips
- Tap and hold on the bright sky near the sun to lock focus/exposure, then slide exposure down slightly to protect highlights - Use the shoreline as a leading line: place it from the bottom-right corner sweeping toward the horizon - Shoot in 0.5x (ultra-wide) for bigger clouds, then take a second at 1x for a cleaner, less-distorted horizon - Enable HDR and take 2–3 frames as the light changes quickly; choose the one with the best cloud detail - Get low near the wet sand to capture reflections and add depth, keeping the horizon level
Logistics & Safety
Easy beach access on the west side near Kekaha; arrive 20–40 minutes before sunset to choose a clean stretch of sand and watch for incoming sets. Be mindful of shorebreak, sneaker waves, and windblown sand; keep gear low and protected from salt spray.
