Koloa Landing Sunset
A wide ocean sunset with glowing horizon color, textured cloud cover, and a palm-lined point silhouetted on the right. The open-water view makes the sun feel big and unobstructed as it drops toward the horizon.

How to Get This Shot
Seasonality
Kauaʻi sunsets work year-round, but the wet season (roughly Nov–Mar) often brings more dramatic clouds that catch color—great for fiery skies when breaks open near the horizon.
In the drier months (about Apr–Oct), skies can be clearer for a clean sun-to-sea composition. Trade winds can add texture to the water and push clouds into pleasing layers.
Photo Tips
- Tap the bright sky near the sun and lower exposure slightly to keep color in the orange band
- Use the palm-point silhouette on the right as a strong anchor; keep it near the right third
- Turn on HDR only if it doesn’t flatten the sunset colors; otherwise shoot a few exposures
- Keep the horizon perfectly level; use your phone’s grid lines
- Try a vertical frame to emphasize the cloud texture and gradient sky
Logistics & Safety
This spot is best at sunset with a clear view to the western horizon; arrive 20–30 minutes early to choose a safe footing near the shoreline and stay through afterglow. Bring a light layer for wind, watch for slippery rocks and splash zones, and be mindful of changing surf at dusk.
