Monk Seal Resting

Hawaiian monk seals can haul out year-round on Kauaʻi, so any season can produce sightings. Winter trade winds can bring rougher seas and more debris on some beaches, while summer often has calmer water and clearer skies for cleaner backgrounds. Regardless of season, plan around time of day more than time of year: early morning or late afternoon light is softer, reduces harsh sand glare, and brings out detail in the seal’s whiskers and coat.

- Use 2×–3× (or your phone’s tele lens) and keep a respectful distance; crop later rather than walking closer. - Tap to focus on the eye/whisker area, then lower exposure slightly to avoid blown highlights on the sand. - Shoot low to the ground to simplify the background and emphasize the seal’s shape. - Take short bursts when the seal lifts its head or yawns—expressions change quickly. - If heat shimmer is visible, shoot earlier in the day and avoid long-distance zoom.

This is at Polihale State Park on Kauaʻi’s west side; access is remote and the road can be rough, so allow extra time, carry water, and be prepared for strong sun and wind. Monk seals are protected—stay well back, never block their path to the ocean, and follow any posted closures or volunteer guidance.
