How to Get This Shot
Seasonality
Calmer ocean conditions are most common in late spring through early fall, which usually makes boat photography easier (less spray, fewer bouncy horizons) and helps keep the waterfalls and cliff details sharper.
In winter, surf and wind can be stronger on the north/west side; tours may reroute or cancel more often. The upside is that recent rains can boost waterfall flow and deepen the greens on the cliffs—when conditions allow.
Photo Tips
- Tap/hold on the cliffs to lock focus and exposure, then slightly lower exposure to keep the sky from blowing out
- Use 0.5x only if the horizon stays straight; otherwise shoot at 1x for less edge distortion
- Time shots for the top of the boat’s rise (momentary pause) to reduce motion blur
- Use burst mode for waves/spray moments and pick the sharpest frame later
- Keep the horizon level; crop a bit of water if needed to emphasize the cliffs and caves
Logistics & Safety
This perspective is typically captured from a boat tour along the Nā Pali Coast; conditions can be wet and bumpy, so protect gear from salt spray, secure straps, and follow crew guidance when moving on deck. Morning trips often offer calmer seas, while changing light and clouds can quickly transform the look of the cliffs.
