How to Get This Shot

Seasonality
For the clearest water and easiest snorkeling conditions, summer (roughly May–September) is often best on Kauaʻi, with generally calmer seas and better visibility. In winter (roughly November–March), north and west shores can see larger surf and more frequent rough conditions; visibility can drop quickly after swells or rain, so choose protected areas and go only when ocean conditions are safe.
Photo Tips
- Use a waterproof case and shoot just below the surface to capture the mirror-like reflections - Tap to focus on the turtle’s eye/face; lower exposure slightly to keep highlights from blowing out - Hold steady and shoot short bursts as the turtle glides past - Keep the sun at your back or off to the side to reduce haze and boost color - Avoid chasing—let the honu come to you for more natural, relaxed poses
Logistics & Safety
This is an offshore, in-water wildlife scene along the Nā Pali Coast—typically accessed by boat tour, kayak (conditions-dependent), or guided snorkel charter; prioritize ocean safety, respect wildlife space (do not touch or crowd turtles), and be mindful that currents, swell, and visibility can change quickly.
