How to Get This Shot

Seasonality
Summer (roughly May–September) is typically the calmest time for ocean conditions on the Nā Pali Coast, making boat and kayak outings more reliable and the water color clearer. Winter (roughly November–March) brings bigger surf and more frequent storms; the cliffs can look moodier with fast-moving clouds, but boat access is more often limited and seas can be rough.
Photo Tips
- Tap to expose for the sunlit ridges, then lower exposure slightly to protect highlights in the sky - Use 2×/3× zoom (tele lens) to compress the ridgelines and emphasize texture - Shoot in burst mode to catch a moment of calm water and clean wave lines - Keep the horizon level and place the shoreline low to let the cliffs dominate - Try a vertical frame to emphasize the height of the spires and shadowed folds
Logistics & Safety
This perspective is most commonly captured from offshore on a Nā Pali Coast boat tour; plan for spray and motion (protect gear and expect shifting angles). If you’re prone to seasickness, choose a larger catamaran, take precautions, and aim for morning departures when conditions are often calmer.
