Nā Pali Sea Cliffs
Towering, folded emerald-and-rust cliffs rise straight from the ocean, with dramatic ridgelines catching warm side light. The low angle makes the coastline feel immense and sculpted.

How to Get This Shot
Seasonality
Summer (roughly May–September) usually brings calmer seas and more reliable boat access, making it easier to get close to the cliffs for photos with less spray and haze.
Winter (roughly November–March) can deliver moodier skies and huge drama, but swells and wind often limit safe boat touring and can reduce sharpness with salt spray; plan for flexibility.
Photo Tips
- Tap-expose on the sunlit ridges to keep highlight detail; lower exposure slightly to avoid blown rock faces
- Use 2x/3x zoom (or step back on the deck) to compress the cliff layers and emphasize the ridgelines
- Wipe the lens often—salt mist quickly softens contrast
- Shoot in burst mode to catch moments between boat bounce and wave spray
- Try a vertical frame to accentuate the cliff height from waterline to peaks
Logistics & Safety
This perspective is typically captured from the water on a Nā Pali boat tour or private vessel; conditions can be windy with frequent spray, and tours are highly weather-dependent. Pack a dry bag, secure your gear, and expect limited space for lens changes.
