How to Get This Shot

Seasonality
Sunsets are great year-round on Kauaʻi’s north and west-facing shores, but late spring through early fall often brings calmer seas and clearer evening skies. In winter (roughly Nov–Mar), storms and bigger surf can add moodier cloud drama—expect more rain squalls and haze, and plan for wind.
Photo Tips
- Tap and hold on the bright sky near the sun to lock focus/exposure, then slide exposure down slightly to preserve color - Keep the horizon perfectly level; use the phone’s grid lines - Shoot a burst as the sun touches the horizon; the best shape changes fast - Try a vertical frame to emphasize the glowing cloud layers above the horizon - Wipe the lens and shield it from side wind/salt spray for cleaner contrast
Logistics & Safety
This look is typically captured from a boat tour or a west/north shoreline viewpoint facing the open Pacific; arrive 30–45 minutes before sunset for the best color build-up and stay 10–20 minutes after for lingering glow.
