Nēnē on Greens

A close wildlife portrait of a nēnē (Hawaiian goose) standing in sunlit grass with soft, rolling green hills behind. The low angle and clean background make the subject pop.

How to Get This Shot

Seasonality
Nēnē can be seen year-round on Kauaʻi, but sightings are often easier during the cooler, wetter months (roughly winter to early spring) when grass stays lush and birds spend more time grazing in open areas. In drier summer months, you may still spot them near irrigated lawns and golf course edges; aim for early morning or late afternoon when light is softer and birds are more active.
Photo Tips
- Tap and hold on the bird to lock focus/exposure; slightly lower exposure to protect white feather detail - Get low to the ground for a more intimate wildlife perspective and a cleaner background - Use 2x–3x (or optical tele lens if available) instead of stepping too close - Shoot in burst mode when the bird turns its head for a sharp, alert pose - Keep the horizon/rolling hill line high and simple to avoid distractions behind the head
Logistics & Safety
This look is typical of open lawns and fairway edges around Poʻipū; stay on public paths/cart paths, do not approach or feed wildlife, and give nēnē plenty of space (they are protected). Early morning is quieter and offers softer light on the greens.
