How to Get This Shot
Seasonality
This type of shot works year-round on Kauaʻi, but calmer summer seas (roughly May–September) often make coastal conditions more predictable and the water color clearer.
In winter (roughly November–March), surf and wind can be much stronger—great for dynamic waves in photos, but more hazardous near rocky shorelines and cliff edges.
Photo Tips
- Use 2x/3x (tele) to compress the scene and keep the jumper large against the sky
- Tap and hold to lock focus/exposure on the rock/jumper; slightly lower exposure to protect highlights in the surf
- Shoot burst mode right as the person leaves the edge; pick the frame with the best body shape
- Keep the horizon level and place it low to emphasize the height and negative space
- If your phone supports it, enable action/fast shutter mode; avoid digital zoom beyond 3x
Logistics & Safety
Look for rocky shoreline viewpoints with clear sightlines to the horizon and interesting stratified cliffs; arrive when side light enhances texture (morning or late afternoon). Use extreme caution near unstable edges and wet rock, and avoid standing close to breaking waves or exposed ledges.
