How to Get This Shot
Seasonality
Kauaʻi’s east shore is a reliable sunrise option year-round because you’re facing open ocean. Trade winds often bring fast-moving cloud bands that can add drama and color right at first light.
Winter mornings can deliver richer pastel skies and lower sun angles, while summer tends to have earlier sunrises and clearer skies—great for crisp silhouettes if clouds are minimal.
Photo Tips
- Tap and hold on the bright sky near the sun to lock focus/exposure, then slide exposure down slightly to preserve color
- Use 0.5x (ultra-wide) carefully to include both palms, but keep the horizon level to avoid distortion
- Turn on the grid; place the horizon on the lower third and let the palms anchor the left side
- Shoot a few seconds before the sun clears the cloud line for softer highlights and better color
- Try a portrait orientation to emphasize the palms against the layered sky
Logistics & Safety
Arrive 20–30 minutes before sunrise to scout a clean palm silhouette and unobstructed horizon; east-shore beaches around Kapaʻa are easy to access but can be breezy, so stabilize your phone/camera and protect gear from salt spray.
