How to Get This Shot
Seasonality
Sunsets are strong year-round on Kauaʻi’s south shore, but late spring through early fall often brings calmer seas and clearer evenings, making it easier to include surfers and reflections without heavy spray.
In winter, larger swell and passing rain showers can create moodier skies and more textured waves—great for drama, but plan for wind, clouds, and faster-changing light.
Photo Tips
- Tap and hold on the bright sky near the sun to lock exposure, then slide exposure down slightly to keep color and avoid blown highlights
- Use 2x/3x telephoto (or step back and zoom) to make the sun appear larger and compress the waves
- Place the horizon on the upper third and keep it level; use gridlines for a clean, graphic look
- Time the shot when a subject (surfer/board/splash) is separated from the background for a crisp silhouette
- Wipe the lens often—salt spray and humidity reduce contrast fast at the shoreline
Logistics & Safety
Arrive 30–45 minutes before sunset to scout a safe, dry shooting spot above the wet sand line and to line up silhouettes in the shorebreak. Watch for sets, slippery rocks, and salt spray, and give surfers plenty of space—stay out of the waterline where boards might come in.
