How to Get This Shot
Seasonality
Kauaʻi’s south shore is typically calmer in summer (roughly May–September), which can mean clearer water and easier access along the lava shelf—great for tidepool textures and color.
For bigger, more explosive wave action like this, winter swells (roughly November–March) are more likely, but conditions can be hazardous and splash can reach farther up the rocks.
Photo Tips
- Tap and hold on the white spray to lock focus/exposure, then slightly lower exposure to preserve highlights
- Use burst mode to catch the peak of the crash and the cleanest spray shape
- Keep the horizon/shoreline level; use the building/palm verticals as a quick reference
- Shoot a little wider than you think; crop later to keep both the wave and shoreline context
- Wipe the lens often—salt mist will soften contrast fast
Logistics & Safety
This is a rocky lava shoreline on Kauaʻi’s south shore near Poʻipū—expect uneven footing, sharp rock, and slippery algae around tidepools. Stay well back from the edge, watch sets for 10–15 minutes before committing to a position, and avoid turning your back on the ocean.
