How to Get This Shot
Seasonality
Sunrise works year-round on Kauaʻi, but late spring through early fall often brings calmer mornings and clearer horizons, increasing your odds of crisp rays and brighter color.
In winter, passing showers and thicker cloud decks can create moodier, more textured skies—great for crepuscular rays—though expect more wind and squalls along the coast.
Photo Tips
- Tap and hold on the bright sky to set focus/exposure, then drag exposure down slightly to keep highlight detail
- Use HDR, but avoid overdoing it—aim to preserve the bright rim-light on the clouds
- Keep the horizon perfectly level; use the grid lines for a clean, minimalist look
- Try a 2x/3x zoom (or step closer to your viewpoint) to emphasize rays and cloud layers
- Take a short burst as the sun breaks gaps in the clouds; the best rays can last seconds
Logistics & Safety
Arrive 20–30 minutes before sunrise for the best color and to scout a stable, safe spot near the shoreline; coastal rocks can be slick and rogue waves are possible. Bring a light layer for wind and salt spray protection for your lens/phone.
