How to Get This Shot

Seasonality
Sunrise works year-round at Poipu, but late spring through early fall often brings calmer seas and clearer mornings, which can sharpen the horizon line and intensify warm color. Winter can deliver the most dramatic cloud structures and moody light—great for this kind of shot—though passing showers and fast-changing weather are more common, so arrive early and be ready to adapt.
Photo Tips
- Tap and hold on the bright sky near the sun to lock focus/exposure, then slide exposure down to keep highlights from blowing out - Use 2x–3x zoom (or step back and crop later) to simplify the frame and make the sunburst-in-clouds feel larger - Keep the horizon perfectly level; use the grid overlay - Try HDR sparingly—too much can flatten the natural contrast; take a second non-HDR frame as backup - Shoot a short burst as the sun peeks through gaps in the clouds; the best moment can last seconds
Logistics & Safety
This is a coastal viewpoint at Poipu Point on Kauaʻi’s south shore; arrive 20–30 minutes before sunrise to set up and watch the light evolve. Expect breezes and salt spray—wipe lenses often—and use caution near wet rocks and cliff edges, especially in surf.
