How to Get This Shot

Seasonality
Rainbows here are most common during passing showers followed by sun breaks—often in the morning or late afternoon when the sun angle is lower. Look for mixed skies: dark rain clouds in one direction with clear light in the other. Winter and shoulder seasons can bring more frequent showers (and thus more rainbow chances), while summer tends to be drier but still delivers quick, photogenic squalls. Windy trade-wind days can create dramatic cloud layers and brighter bows.
Photo Tips
- Tap to expose for the sky to hold rainbow color; then slightly lower exposure if needed - Use 1x for a clean horizon; switch to 0.5x only if you can keep the horizon level - Add a foreground anchor (shoreline curve, rocks, or palms) to avoid a “sky only” shot - Try burst mode when the rainbow intensifies between cloud breaks - Wipe the lens—sea spray and humidity quickly soften contrast
Logistics & Safety
This is a south-shore beach scene around Poʻipū with easy access from nearby beach parks and resort-area paths; expect wind, occasional showers, and bright glare off the water. Watch surf and slippery rocks near the shoreline, and be mindful of beach equipment and lifeguard areas when composing.
