How to Get This Shot
Seasonality
Sunset works year-round on Kauaʻi’s south shore, and Poʻipū often benefits from partly cloudy skies that catch color after the sun drops.
In winter, north swells can wrap into some south-shore coves and boost wave action; in summer the water is often calmer, making it easier to work close to the rocks (still watch for rogue sets).
Photo Tips
- Tap and hold on the bright sky to set exposure, then slide down slightly to keep highlights from blowing out
- Use 2x/3x zoom (or step back) to simplify the scene and keep the resort/palms as a clean silhouette
- Try a low angle near the rocks to emphasize texture and leading lines toward the horizon
- Shoot a burst when waves hit—spray moments look best at peak impact
- Use HDR sparingly; too much can flatten the glow in the clouds
Logistics & Safety
This is a shoreline, rock-hopping viewpoint in Poʻipū: wear grippy footwear, keep distance from wet algae-covered rocks, and watch the ocean for larger sets before stepping closer. Arrive 20–30 minutes before sunset to set up and stay through the afterglow for the best color.
