How to Get This Shot
Seasonality
Poʻipū sunsets are strong year-round, but late spring through early fall often brings clearer horizons and calmer trade-wind conditions that help keep color clean and contrasty.
Winter can deliver the most dramatic skies and surf, which looks fantastic against the rocky shoreline—just expect more spray, stronger winds, and quickly changing light as squalls move through.
Photo Tips
- Tap to expose for the bright sky near the sun, then slightly lower exposure to keep highlight detail
- Use 0.5x (ultra-wide) to emphasize the lava-rock texture, but keep the horizon level to avoid distortion
- Hold the phone low to make the rocks a leading foreground; include a small strip of ocean for scale
- Enable HDR, but avoid overdoing it—watch for halos around clouds and palms
- Wipe the lens frequently (sea spray can soften contrast fast)
Logistics & Safety
Rocky shoreline access is straightforward around Poʻipū, but footing is uneven and can be slippery with algae and spray—wear grippy shoes, keep back from wave-washed ledges, and plan to arrive 20–30 minutes before sunset for the best light and compositions.
