How to Get This Shot

Seasonality
Sunrise works year-round in Poʻipū, but the most dramatic scenes often happen when there are mid-level clouds to catch color and create visible rays. Winter through early spring can bring more frequent cloud bands and textured skies, while summer often has clearer horizons for cleaner, simpler sunrise compositions.
Photo Tips
- Tap/hold on the bright sky near the sun to lock focus/exposure, then lower exposure slightly to keep highlight detail - Use 0.5× (ultra-wide) to include the palm silhouette for framing, but keep the horizon level - Shoot a burst as the sun breaks the cloud edge—rays change minute to minute - Try HDR, but if it looks unnatural, turn it off and underexpose a touch for a moodier silhouette look - Wipe the lens (salt spray/humidity) to avoid haze and flare
Logistics & Safety
Poʻipū’s south shore is easy to reach and offers multiple oceanfront viewpoints from resort edges and coastal access areas; arrive 20–30 minutes before sunrise, expect breezes and occasional spray on rocky shoreline, and stay well back from wet rocks and surge zones.
