How to Get This Shot
Seasonality
Sunrise scenes here look great year-round, but late spring through early fall often brings calmer mornings and clearer horizons, making the sunburst and ocean reflections cleaner.
Winter can deliver more dynamic skies and bigger surf; it’s moodier and more powerful but can limit safe access to the rock shelf and tide pools due to higher waves and wind.
Photo Tips
- Arrive 20–30 minutes before sunrise to capture the best color in the clouds
- Tap to expose for the bright sky, then slightly lower exposure to preserve highlights around the sun
- Use the tide pools as foreground anchors; crouch low to emphasize reflections
- Try 0.5x ultra-wide for a sweeping sky, then 1x for a cleaner sunburst composition
- Wipe sea spray off the lens often; even tiny droplets create haze and flare
Logistics & Safety
This is a rocky shoreline with uneven footing and slippery algae; wear reef shoes and stay back from sudden sets, especially in winter. Check tide times for more exposed tide pools and plan to park nearby in the Poʻipū area, then walk carefully along the shore for a clear view east toward sunrise.
