How to Get This Shot
Seasonality
Sunrise is strong year-round on Kauaʻi, but the most dramatic color often happens when there are mid-level clouds with clear breaks near the horizon.
Winter and shoulder seasons can bring more dynamic cloud systems (and windier seas), while summer mornings are often clearer and cleaner—great for crisp horizons and softer pastels.
Photo Tips
- Tap and hold on the bright sky to lock focus/exposure, then slide exposure down slightly to keep cloud color
- Use 2x/tele to make the sun appear larger and simplify the composition
- Keep the horizon perfectly level (enable grid) for a polished seascape look
- Shoot a short burst or Live Photo as waves and clouds shift quickly
- Try HDR, but if it flattens color, turn it off and expose for highlights
Logistics & Safety
This is a straightforward ocean-horizon sunrise from the Poʻipū area—arrive 20–30 minutes before sunrise to catch peak color, and be mindful of wind, spray, and slippery shoreline rocks if you’re near the waterline.
