How to Get This Shot

Seasonality
Poʻipū sunsets photograph well year-round, but late spring through early fall often brings clearer evenings and smoother color gradients with less dramatic cloud cover. In winter (roughly Nov–Mar), stronger surf and passing showers can add texture and moody skies—great for drama, though wind may make palms and foreground elements harder to keep crisp without faster shutter speeds.
Photo Tips
- Tap and hold on the bright sky near the horizon to lock focus/exposure, then slightly lower exposure to keep sunset colors - Use 2×/3× zoom (or step closer) to compress the headland and palms for a stronger silhouette - Level the horizon using the grid; keep it on the lower third to emphasize the sky - Try Portrait mode OFF for landscapes; it can blur palm edges unnaturally - Shoot a few frames as the light fades—often the best color happens 5–15 minutes after sunset
Logistics & Safety
This is a straightforward coastal viewpoint near Poʻipū with easy access around resort and beach areas; arrive 20–30 minutes before sunset to pick a clean horizon line and foreground rocks, and watch footing on uneven lava rock and tide pools as it gets dark.
