How to Get This Shot
Seasonality
Year-round sunsets are great on Kauaʻi’s south shore, but late spring through early fall often brings clearer evenings and calmer ocean surfaces that enhance reflections and color.
Winter can deliver the most dramatic skies and rain curtains on the horizon, but expect stronger winds, bigger surf, and more frequent squalls—arrive early and be flexible for breaks in the clouds.
Photo Tips
- Tap to focus on the bright sky near the sun, then slide exposure down slightly to keep highlight detail
- Use HDR (or “Smart HDR”) and shoot a few frames as the light changes fast near the horizon
- Get low and include a strip of foreground plants/rocks for depth; keep the horizon level
- Wipe the lens and use your hand as a shade to reduce flare from the low sun
- Try a 1–2s Live/long-exposure mode (if available) once the sun dips to soften wave texture
Logistics & Safety
This is a south-shore coastal viewpoint near Poʻipū with easy access and open sightlines to the horizon; arrive 20–30 minutes before sunset to choose a safe perch above wet rocks, and watch for rogue waves and slippery tidepool areas.
