How to Get This Shot
Seasonality
Kauaʻi sunsets work year-round, but late spring through early fall often brings calmer seas and clearer skies for clean color gradients and smoother reflections.
In winter (roughly Nov–Mar), expect bigger surf and more dramatic cloud action—great for mood and wave energy, but arrive early and stay well back from the shoreline due to rogue sets on rocky coasts.
Photo Tips
- Tap-expose on the bright sky near the sun, then lower exposure slightly to keep highlights from blowing out
- Get low to include the rocks and the wave as a leading foreground
- Use 2x/3x (if available) to tighten the sun reflection and simplify the horizon
- Turn on HDR, but avoid overdoing it—watch for halos around clouds
- Shoot a short burst as waves crest to capture a clean curl and splash
Logistics & Safety
This is a shoreline viewpoint near Poʻipū on Kauaʻi’s south coast; arrive 20–30 minutes before sunset for the best color and stay through twilight for richer blues. Watch footing on wet rocks, keep distance from the waterline, and be mindful of changing surf and tide.
