How to Get This Shot

Seasonality
Sunsets are great year-round on Kauaʻi’s north shore, but late spring through early fall often brings calmer trade-wind patterns that can create crisp, high-contrast cloud texture. In winter, more frequent storms can produce the most explosive color and towering cloud formations—just expect fast-changing weather and occasional rain bands near sunset.
Photo Tips
- Tap the brightest cloud area to set exposure, then lower exposure slightly to keep highlights from blowing out - Use 2x (or a slight zoom) to simplify the frame and reduce empty foreground - Turn on HDR, but avoid overprocessing—watch for halos along cloud edges - Hold steady and shoot a short burst as colors change quickly in the last 5–10 minutes - Try portrait orientation to emphasize the vertical cloud structure and layered sky
Logistics & Safety
Princeville has multiple west-facing vantage points (beach access and bluff lookouts); arrive 20–30 minutes before sunset to set up and to catch the best color after the sun dips below the horizon. Expect wind on exposed overlooks and be mindful of private property and cliff edges in low light.
