How to Get This Shot

Seasonality
On Kauaʻi, red-crested cardinals can be seen year-round, so any season works for this kind of portrait. For the most flattering light, prioritize early morning or late afternoon when the sun is low—this helps avoid harsh shadows on the white chest and keeps the background darker for stronger subject separation.
Photo Tips
- Use 2–3x (or your phone’s telephoto) and get as close as possible without disturbing the bird - Tap to focus on the eye; slightly lower exposure to protect the white feathers from blowing out - Hold steady and shoot short bursts as the bird shifts pose - Look for a darker, distant background to maximize blur and make the red head stand out - If available, use Portrait mode cautiously—fine feathers can confuse edge detection
Logistics & Safety
These birds are often found in parks, gardens, and shrubby edges around Kapaʻa/Wailua; move slowly, keep respectful distance, and position yourself so the background is far behind the perch for the smoothest blur.
