How to Get This Shot
Seasonality
Sunrise light works year-round on Kauaʻi’s west- and south-facing coasts, but late spring through early fall often brings calmer seas and clearer horizons for cleaner reflections in tide pools.
In winter, bigger surf and frequent squalls can create moodier skies and more dramatic wave action—great for photos, but be extra cautious around exposed rock shelves and surge.
Photo Tips
- Shoot in 0.5x/ultrawide to emphasize the leading lines of the rock shelves toward the sun
- Tap-expose on the bright sky, then slightly raise shadows in edit to keep rock detail
- Use HDR (or shoot RAW/DNG if available) to balance bright sunset and dark foreground
- Hold the phone low near the wet rock to capture stronger reflections and texture
- Time shots between wave sets so the foreground pools are glassy for reflections
Logistics & Safety
This is a rocky shoreline with tide pools and slick, uneven footing—wear grippy footwear and keep a safe distance from wave wash and sudden surges. Arrive 30–45 minutes before sunrise to scout a stable foreground and avoid stepping on fragile tide-pool life.
