How to Get This Shot
Seasonality
Spinner dolphins can be seen around Kauaʻi year-round, but calmer ocean days make sightings and sharp photos more likely.
Summer typically brings smoother seas and brighter, clearer light for offshore wildlife viewing, while winter can mean bigger swells and more wind that make boat positioning and photography harder.
Photo Tips
- Use burst mode (or hold the shutter) to catch the peak of the breach
- Tap and hold to lock focus/exposure on the dolphin area; slightly lower exposure to protect highlights on the water
- Keep the horizon level and leave space in front of the dolphin for a more dynamic frame
- Clean your lens and shade it with your hand to reduce glare from ocean reflections
- If available, use 2x/3x optical zoom rather than digital zoom; crop later
Logistics & Safety
This is an offshore wildlife moment near Kauaʻi’s south shore; the best approach is a reputable boat tour or shoreline vantage where dolphins are commonly observed. Follow local guidelines: never chase, crowd, or attempt to swim with resting spinner dolphins, and maintain respectful distance for both safety and ethical viewing.
