How to Get This Shot
Seasonality
White-tailed tropicbirds are most reliably seen around Kauaʻi during their breeding season, generally late winter through summer, when they frequent coastal cliffs and nearshore air currents.
Year-round sightings can happen, but calmer, clearer days with steady trade winds often improve flight-photo opportunities and keep the background sky clean.
Photo Tips
- Use continuous/burst mode and start tracking early; keep the bird in-frame with extra space ahead of its beak
- Tap-and-hold to lock focus/exposure on the bird, then slightly lower exposure to protect white feathers
- Avoid digital zoom if possible; instead shoot wider and crop later for better detail
- Position with the sun at your back for cleaner contrast and less silhouette
- Keep the horizon out of frame for a minimalist sky background (like this shot)
Logistics & Safety
This is best attempted from coastal viewpoints or cliffside areas where seabirds ride the wind; arrive early for parking and fewer people, watch footing near edges, and keep a respectful distance from any nesting areas or posted closures.
