How to Get This Shot

Seasonality
Sunsets are strong year-round on Kauaʻi’s north shore, but summer (roughly May–September) typically brings calmer seas and clearer water, making the shoreline and reflections easier to photograph. In winter (roughly November–March), north shore surf can be large and access to the waterline may be limited; skies can be dramatic, though, which can elevate sunset color if conditions cooperate.
Photo Tips
- Tap to expose for the bright sky/water, then slightly raise shadows in edit to keep the cliffs from going too dark - Use the umbrella as a framing element: place it in the top-right third and keep the pole straight - Try a low angle close to the sand to emphasize texture leading toward the coastline - Shoot a short burst to catch sparkles on the water without motion blur from small hand movements - Wipe the lens—salt spray and sand haze reduce contrast fast near the shoreline
Logistics & Safety
Tunnels (Makua) Beach is on Kauaʻi’s north shore near Hā‘ena; arrive early for parking and walk carefully over sand and beach access paths. Conditions can change quickly—especially in winter—so keep distance from shorebreak and secure loose items in wind.
