Wailua Falls

Wailua Falls can look fuller after wetter stretches, while clearer, drier stretches often bring brighter color and more defined texture in the cliffs and trees. With the main view facing NNE, the falls can shift from soft, hazy light to high contrast depending on cloud cover. When the sun is behind you, a mist rainbow can sometimes appear near the plunge pool (like in this photo). At ~96 m elevation it can feel a bit breezy, and spray can drift up toward the viewpoint.

- Use 0.5x or 1x to capture the full scene (falls + plunge pool + rainbow arc), then try 2x to tighten on the waterfall texture. - Tap-and-hold on the bright white water to lock focus/exposure, then slide exposure down a touch to keep highlights from blowing out. - Keep the tree line level near the top of the frame; place the waterfall on the left third and leave room for the rainbow across the bottom. - Include a small strip of foreground grasses/ferns for depth, but avoid letting them block the base of the falls. - Turn on HDR (or your phone’s equivalent) to hold detail in both the sky and the shaded canyon. - Wipe the lens often—fine mist can create haze and reduce contrast fast.

This is typically photographed from a roadside lookout with limited space, so it can feel busy when multiple groups stop at once. Surfaces near viewpoints can be damp from mist; keep a stable stance and give the edge plenty of respect. If you want a cleaner frame and less foot traffic, arriving earlier often helps. Pack water protection for gear and a cloth for lenses.
