How to Get This Shot

Seasonality
Feral chickens and roosters are common year-round on Kauaʻi, so you can make this photo in any season. For the best light and calmest conditions, aim for early morning or late afternoon; midday sun can create harsh highlights on the comb and shiny feathers, especially in drier summer months.
Photo Tips
- Tap to focus on the eye; slide exposure down slightly to protect the bright red comb highlights - Use Portrait mode (if available) for extra background blur, but watch for edge artifacts around the comb - Get low to the rooster’s eye level for a more engaging, intimate perspective - Hold steady and shoot a short burst; pick the frame with the sharpest eye and best head angle - Keep the background simple (grass or distant foliage) and avoid bright patches that compete with the subject
Logistics & Safety
Roosters are often found near parking areas, lookout pullouts, and picnic spots around Waimea Canyon; move slowly, keep a respectful distance, and watch for traffic if you’re near roadside viewpoints. Avoid feeding wildlife and be mindful of uneven ground and sudden gusts at canyon overlooks.
