Waiʻoli Church
A charming green, Gothic-style church set on a wide lawn with palms and misty mountains behind it. The steep rooflines and arched stained-glass windows make a strong, graphic subject.

How to Get This Shot
Seasonality
Kauaʻi’s north shore is lush year-round, but winter (roughly Nov–Mar) tends to bring more frequent rain showers and dramatic cloud backdrops—great for moody skies, though you may get flatter light between squalls.
Late spring through early fall often offers steadier weather and cleaner views of the surrounding hills. Aim for early morning or late afternoon for softer contrast on the dark siding and brighter detail in the windows.
Photo Tips
- Tap to expose for the church facade (not the sky) to keep the building from going too dark
- Use 0.5x/ultra-wide carefully; step back and keep the phone level to avoid leaning walls
- Try Portrait mode on the palm trunk as a foreground element, then take a second “normal” shot for safety
- Shoot a quick HDR/Live option if available to balance bright clouds and dark siding
- Move a few steps left/right to keep the palm trunk from cutting into key rooflines
Logistics & Safety
This spot is in Hanalei; visit respectfully as an active church property and be mindful of services and private areas. The lawn is open and photogenic, but conditions can change quickly with passing showers—bring rain protection for gear and watch for wet grass.
