Waiʻoli Huiʻia Church
A classic Hanalei landmark with steep shingle rooflines and arched stained-glass windows framed by lush lawn and palms. The moody overcast sky helps the dark siding and bright trim pop.

How to Get This Shot
Seasonality
Kauaʻi’s north shore is rainier in winter (roughly Nov–Mar), which can bring dramatic clouds like this photo but also wetter grounds and more frequent showers.
Late spring through early fall (about Apr–Oct) often offers more consistent light and easier walk-up conditions, while soft morning or late-afternoon light adds dimension to the church’s textures and windows.
Photo Tips
- Step back to keep vertical lines straighter; use your phone’s 1x lens and enable gridlines
- Tap-expose on the church siding, then slightly lower exposure to hold detail in the cloudy sky
- Try a low angle from the path to use it as a leading line into the open doors
- Use Portrait mode sparingly; keep edges crisp for architecture
- If it’s bright overcast, shoot HDR/Smart HDR to retain window and trim detail
Logistics & Safety
This spot is in Hanalei on Kauaʻi’s North Shore; expect roadside/nearby parking and quick access from the lawn and walkway, but be respectful of services and private areas. Overcast and rain are common—bring a small towel for lenses and watch for wet steps.
